I hope to gain a better understanding of the genes that are responsible for the formation of beneficial microbial associations in the roots of plants. These associations include arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and bacteria that promote plant growth. When my objective is accomplished, it will be easier to take advantage of natural biotic associations that enhance plant nutrition. When it comes to the cultivation of sorghum, which is used as feedstock for biofuels as well as other crops, this will ultimately result in a reduction in the requirement for inorganic fertilizers.
