Research Focus

School leadership preparation and its impact on leadership practice within the Tanzanian primary sector: A survey study of twenty contextually different state primary schools in the Tanga region of Tanzania

The study will be conducted in the Tanga District, Tanzania. Primarily this is due to my established links in the region, generated through 15 years of leading Global School Partnerships supported by the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms scheme. This work has allowed me to develop positive links with the city education office, a key player in policy development, and several head teachers. These strong relationships will be important to ensure high quality fieldwork supports my methodology of multi-site ethnography. (See methodology section)

Relevant Tanzanian literature, reviewed during my Masters studies, specifically analysing the quality of Primary School leadership in Tanga, suggests that many of the issues faced in the region are typical to those that exists on a national scale. EDQUAL, (2010) Through my work, supported by links with the University of Dar Es Salaam, I will contribute to research on leadership development which, through the support of organisations, such as EDQUAL, will inform the development of education policy within Tanzania.
