My research focuses on characterizing the aerosols at the interface of the ocean and atmosphere in False Bay, South Africa. With the unique location and orography of this study area, opportunities exist for measuring pure marine air masses coming from Antarctica that is ideal for characterizing natural sea spray aerosols, which is lacking in global prediction models for climate change. At the same time, the characterization of the natural aerosols can be used as a proxy for pre-industrial conditions. The aim of the study is to expand the knowledge base on atmospheric aerosols to improve the accuracy of inputs to prediction models and to address the scarcity of observational aerosol data in the Southern Hemisphere.
