2020 Travel Awards for Young Global Goals researchers

We are launching a crowdfunding campaign to create a travel awards fund for Global Goals researchers.

We are working with Global Giving to set up the fund. Global Giving have rigorous checking, research and training for new organisations joining their platform, so we are in good company and very pleased to have their support.

We plan to run 2 rounds of crowdfunding this year, firstly in June and then again in October. Our project will be live on the Global Giving website for the first time.

How will our 2020 Travel Awards programme work?

Once we have created the fund, using the donations to our crowdfunding campaign, we will invite researchers to apply for travel awards for 2020.

The travel awards will be available to early-career researchers, based within Africa, travelling to safe destinations worldwide.

The awards can be applied to:

  • Field work;
  • Conferences;
  • Collaboration meetings;

or other travel directly related to a researcher’s work on a project that contributes to the achievement of the UN SDG targets.

Applications will be considered by our review panel based on the following criteria:

  • Research outcomes that contribute to UN SDG targets;
  • The career stage of the applicant, to encourage younger researchers;
  • The quality of the application;
  • Capacity of the researcher to report on the impact of the award.

The review panel for the 2020 Global Academy Travel Awards will include:

  • Global Academy staff;
  • Senior Academics from the Global Academy advisory board;
  • A research management professional;
  • Global Academy partner donors.

Targets for the Global Academy 2020 Travel Awards

In 2020 we would like to make at least 4 travel awards. We will accept applications for awards up to £1,500 so we need to raise £6,000 - £10,000 though our crowdfunding campaign.

Money to researchers

We also want to reach as many donors as possible as part of our mission our mission to engage researchers with the Global Goals framework. We plan to ask partner organisations to help with this, including Global Academy Jobs, Perrett Laver, the Global Compact and international research funding organisations.

Larger donors to the Travel Awards fund will be able to name a travel award for their company or organisation, an event, themselves, or even as a memorial.

Get involved

Donate via our Global Giving page
If you would like to be a partner for the awards and help us chose a recipient for your named travel award please get in touch so we can help you complete your contribution.

Join the Global Academy and make a donation, to get your own researcher page at www.theglobalacademy.ac  We build pages for Travel Award donors, using publicly available information or details you provide.  This is one of the ways we say ‘thank you’ to our donors because researchers are usually responsible for their own pages.  Generous donors can receive 2 pages, one for themselves and one for another researcher working on the same project.

Nominate yourself or a junior colleague to receive a Global Academy Travel Award in 2020. We will share full details of our application process at the end of 2019, so watch our Twitter account and our blog
