Research Focus

I have a special interest in evolution and how it shapes the world around us and lately, how we can use evolution to shape our world for the better. In the past as an academic researcher my focus varied from understanding and developing microorganisms for bioethanol production to understanding the mechanisms by which antimicrobial resistance spreads between microorganisms. Currently, as a Senior Scientist at Roche Sequencing Solutions, I’m helping to develop directed evolution technologies that facilitate engineering the enzymes used in the next wave of DNA sequencing technologies.

  • Development of directed evolution tools for engineering polymerase enzymes used in novel high throughput DNA sequencing technologies.
  • Plasmids as vectors for antibiotic resistance: Evolution of plasmid host range.
  • Contagious antibiotic resistance: plasmid transfer among bacterial residents of the zebrafish gut.
  • Differential gene expression within the central metabolic pathways of a thermophilic microorganism used for bioethanol production.
